Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Uploading images:
1. Why do I need to use Café (call for entries) as the portal for uploading my images?
· Café is a convenient way for us to collect all images and contact information of entrants. It also provides a convenient way to present all images to the jurors so that their votes can be recorded and counted. Finally, Café provides a convenient way for us to communicate back to you concerning your success in this juried show. The site ‘Café’ is owned and operated by the Western States Art Foundation (WESTAF).
2. How do I choose a single category under which to list my images if they fall into multiple categories?
· In cases where you are uploading multiple images that span categories, it is essential that you choose a primary category under which your images will be evaluated. The judges will certainly give full consideration of photographs relevant to the show even if they do not fit perfectly into the category selected (e.g. a photo showing the natural beauty of mountains will still be judged even if entered under the category natural environment-desert)
3. Is it possible to receive a waiver of the submission fee or an additional discount on the fees?
· We regret that we cannot alter or waive the submission fee.
4. My image is larger than 1.8 MB, how can I submit it?
· There is a practical limit to the size of files that can be uploaded which are established by Café. If your image is too large, please follow the instructions provided by the Café website to adjust your image to the proper size.
Judging:
1. Will judges have access to my name and Biographical-sketch?
· No, judging will be “blind” as to the identity of the entrant
2. Will judges have access to the title and 1000 character description of the work?
· Yes, however judges will no doubt be more focused upon the strength and effectiveness of your image without such description.
3. Will the environmental relevance or the artistic achievement of an image play a bigger role in selecting finalists?
· We are seeking the most striking artistic images that convey the message of sustainability. Therefore, both of these factors will receive equal weight.
4. Will the judges be selecting the winning entries based solely on the jpg image that I upload or will they be evaluating a print that I might be asked to provide?
· Judging will be based solely upon the jpg image that you upload to Café. You must be certain that your digital photo file is sufficient to produce a high quality photographic print for display.
Disposition of images:
1. What will happen to the roughly 30 images that are put on display?
- The 30 finalists who are asked to submit prints of their photograph are welcome to list a sale price for their photo and contact information so that they can arrange sale of their images with exhibit attendees who may contact them.
- Jpeg images along with prints from the finalists will remain available to the City of Palm Springs for non-commercial use with full attribution of the image to the photographer. Prints may be displayed in City facilities as part of an on-going effort to raise awareness about sustainability. Images may also be used on the City’s website or used to advertise subsequent contests that may be held in the coming years.
- Subject to the wishes of the top 3 finalists, they may agree to have their work entered into a silent auction for an AIDS Assistance benefit that has been scheduled for the first week of May 2010. Should they contribute their work for this purpose and should their work sell at auction, they will be provided with a letter indicating the value of their gift to this non-profit organization. The AIDS Assistance Program will provide such a letter and the City of Palm Springs and the contest organizers will not provide such documentation.
